Career Guidance Centre inaugurated at DUHS

Karachi—Guidance plays a pivotal role in shaping the lives of today’s youth who are faced with fierce career competition and a wide range of career choices in terms of the different disciplines that they can opt for. Pakistani fellowship is very difficult.

Policy makers must provide an opportunity to young generation for embarking their career said Prof. Masood Hameed Khan, Vice Chancellor, Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) while inaugurating the newly established, fully fledged Career Guidance Centre at Dow Medical College, DUHS.

Dow University today launched newly established Career Guidance Centre which will offer a one-stop solution to medical students with career choices by workshops, resource centre, individual counseling and mentorship program. Prof. Masood Hameed further said that Pakistan is facing high unemployment and a severe skill shortage.

Our schools have very little training and information to give to learners choosing a career path, which results in learners making poor decisions.

In response to this, Dow University has introduced a new interactive, computer-based career guidance unit featuring an elaborate range of career opportunities.

What makes this project so exciting is the way in which it is designed to be “learner centered”. With this model, learners are encouraged to make life choices and decisions for themselves. They take responsibility for the choices they make, while having excellent mentors to guide them through the process. This vibrant centre will provide a career exploration area where, through the use of multi-media, learners will be able to get a true sense of the workplace and what it entails. A resource area will be provided to both the learners and educators with all the resources they could possibly need. Prof. Dr. Zakiuddin, Director Medical Affairs & E-communications, PharmEvo informed that in this centre there will be a series of workshops which will explores concepts that are usually difficult to explain. The Workshops will have a strong focus on life skills which go hand in hand with the career skills, and this allows learners to truly understand the impact of the choices and decisions they make, as well as to help them make wise long-term plans for their futures. Prof. Haroon Qasim, Managing Director, PharmEvo said that Dow Unviersity has really embraced the new technological age and ensured that they have video, internet, as well as impressive visuals, to truly communicate with a new generation of career.

Dr. Saleem Ilyas, Director, Professional Developmen Centre of DMC said that career counseling centre will provide students an opportunity to choose their profession in future as well as to improve their skills.

In the centre, a Career and Information Resource is maintained where students will be provided with relevant information regarding various scholarships and admission to different national and international institutes. The career counseling centre will provide students a chance to have close interaction with experts from various walks of life and to get benefit from their experience.
